5 More Tips to Better Gas Mileage

A continuation from my original article at http://www.presariosays.com/2007/12/presario-says-10-ways-to-save-gas.html

Gas prices are high. Certainly there does not need to be a billion news stories about it … unless it’s about prices going down. Right now, what is needed are tips to better gas mileage to get the most out of the gas we have in the tanks. Every little tip helps.

1. Check for the Best Gas Prices
There are several sites that will tell you the best prices in gasoline for your area:
Gas Buddy

MapQuest Gas

MSN Autos

2. Slow Down
No, don’t go 50 miles per hour on a highway with a speed limit of 65, because that’s dangerous. But observe the speed limit. Know that for every 5 miles per hour you go more than 65 gas mileage decreases rapidly. It’s not about extremes, but about moderation.

3. Avoid idling and rush hour traffic
You're burning fuel while idling – up to a gallon every hour. So, avoid rush hour traffic when possible.

4. Don't top off gas and tighten the cap.
When buying gas, stop when the pump shuts off automatically. And remember, your tank needs both fuel and fumes, so tighten the gas cap after every fill-up.

5. Don't accelerate up hill.
Build up speed before an incline, and then maintain it on the way up. Coast on the way down for additional fuel economy.
